Wild animal problem FAQ

Should I encourage squirrels into my garden?

Commonly found in Walsall, either loved or hated, if you encourage them into your garden be prepared for it, and possibly those of your neighbours, to be damaged.  They are not protected by law, you may destroy them, but remember should you trap them you must not release them again.  Apart from being illegal they would probably not survive in a new environment.

How can I encourage hedgehogs into my garden?

An environmentally friendly form of pest control.  You can encourage them by putting out cat food for them plus water to drink.  A small quantity of leaves or grass cuttings will provide harbourage, always check it before trying to dig it and never burn it.

Can I feed the wildlife?

Yes.  Put down just enough food for the creatures to take in one session.  Left over food will attract flies, wasps and other pests.

I have foxes in my garden what can I do to deter them?

Ensure that you remove everything which may attract or harbour the foxes.  Many garden centres sell humane fox/animal deterrents which if used in accordance with the instructions on the packet may help to tackle a problem with foxes entering your property.

You might also try to trap them, or employ somebody else to do so, but remember if you release them into the wild they will almost certainly come into conflict with indigenous foxes.
