Mayoral events

Mayor Making

Normally second Monday in May in Council Chamber. Mayor and Deputy Mayor elected and then buffet supper for councillors and local dignitaries in Walsall Town Hall.

Civic Sunday

Normally early part of June. Traditionally to introduce the Mayor to the people of Walsall. St. Matthews Church for service. Different church will be used if Mayor not C of E. Then into Town Hall for the Buns & Shilling ceremony. Traditionally at this time the Mayor would hand out a shilling and bun to pupils of the Blue Coat Schools.

At Homes

Normally early part of July. To introduce Mayoress to the people of Walsall. Afternoon tea held in Walsall Town Hall. Representatives from local organisations invited, local dignitaries etc.

Walsall Illuminations

Held in middle of September. Mayors from the local boroughs invited to a civic preview on the opening night of Walsall Illuminations.

Remembrance Sunday

Held on nearest Sunday closest to 11 th November. Parade starts from Council House and service at Walsall Cenotaph. Mayor lays wreath at Carloss statue and at Cenotaph. Salute past and reception in Committee Room Suite.

Sister Dora Service

Held on the nearest Sunday to the birthday of Sister Dora (mid Jan). To commemorate the life of Sister Dora. Wreaths laid at the Sister Dora statue, followed by service at St. Pauls followed by small reception in Council House. Local dignitaries and health representatives invited.

New Year Babies

Held between Jan and March. Any babies born in the Walsall Borough on New Years Day are presented with a spoon. Mayor invites babies, parents and health representatives to Parlour for presentation and afternoon tea.

Walking The Fair

Normally held middle of April. Reintroduced in 1996. The Mayor used to declare the annual market open by parading up and down the streets. Nowadays the Mayor and a small number of guests walk and meet public and shop keepers in the main shopping precincts.

Ex-Mayors' Supper

Ex Mayors and Mayoresses are invited to a buffet supper in Conference Room suite.

Second Civic Sunday

Follows the same lines as Civic Sunday but traditionally it is for the Mayor to introduce himself to the people in his own parish. Not every Mayor has this.

Charity Ball

Dinner/Dance open to all. Money raised from ticket sales donated to Mayor's Charity.

Emergency Services Supper

Buffet Supper for representatives from the local police, fire and ambulance service.

Magistrates' Reception

Buffet for representatives from the local benches in recognition of their services.

Press Lunch

Same as above for representatives from the Press.

Mayor's Civic Awards

Recognises organisations and individuals with an awards ceremony. Mayor hand out "Doras" to the winners.
