Equality Impact Assessments

An Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA) is simply a tool/process that enables us to check out how an existing service or policy or a new service or policy affects groups of people covered by equalities legislation and our Equality and Diversity Strategy. It allows us to look at evidence or consult as to whether the service or policy is discriminating (actual or perceived to be) against a particular group of people. We can then change the policy or service if it having an adverse effect on some groups, or indeed highlight it as good practice if it is having a beneficial effect.

Best practice examples

The benefit of Equality Impact Assessments is not simply achieving legal compliance but a means to best practice and to delivering more effective, appropriate and inclusive policies and practices.

Best Practices are examples of outstanding contributions to improving the lives of people in Walsall. They:

  • Can have a demonstrable and tangible impact on improving people's quality of life;
  • Can be the result of effective partnerships between the public, private and civic sectors of society;
  • Can be socially, culturally, economically and environmentally sustainable.

Best Practices are promoted and used as a means of:

  • Improving public policy based on what works;
  • Raising awareness of decision-makers at all levels and of the public of potential solutions to common social, economic and environmental problems;
  • Sharing and transferring knowledge, expertise and experience through networking and learning.

Below are listed some such examples and we hope that these inform others about the excellent work that is currently being undertaken in Walsall:
