Complaints process

Once you have made your complaint, you will be told in writing what will happen to it.

The Assessment Sub Committee will be the first sub-committee who will deal with your grievance with a meeting of no less than three members deciding what will happen next. This meeting will be chaired by one of the Standards Committees independent members and is normally held within 20 days of receipt of your complaint.

This committee can decide to:

  • Investigate your complaint
  • Send it to the Standards Board to investigate
  • Take no further action
  • Take some other action

“Other action” is usually some form of conflict resolution, mediation or training.   This decision is reached where it is decided that it is likely to resolve the situation more effectively than through an investigation or possible sanction.

The committee will write to you to tell you the reason for its decision.

You may not agree with these reasons or think that the Committee did not make the decision properly or you may have new information that you think might affect its decision. If so, you can ask the review sub-committee to review the decision. You have to ask to do this in writing within 30 calendar days of receiving the decision.

The Review sub-committee must consider your request within three months. The decision of the Assessment Sub Committee will be reviewed by at least three different members of the Standards Committee who sit as the review sub-committee. None of the people who participated in the Assessment Sub Committee are allowed to participate in this review.

This meeting will be chaired by one of the independent members and the committee can agree to uphold the original decision of the Assessment Sub Committee or overturn it.

This decision will be put in writing to you after the committee meeting.

There is no right to seek a further internal review if you disagree with the decision of the Review Sub Committee.
