Children's Services new starters' learning log
Welcome to Walsall Children’s Services. You have joined a dynamic service which is responding to the national change agenda to ensure that we deliver the very best outcomes for our children, young people and their families.
Our vision
"We believe that all children and young people in Walsall have the right to be healthy, happy and safe, to be loved, valued and respected and have high aspirations for a successful future."
(Walsall Children's and Young People’s Plan 2009/10 – 2011/12)
To contribute towards this vision, children’s services recognise the importance of having a workforce who work together to deliver better outcomes. Workforce development is a key priority for us.
In the spirit of workforce development, we have created an induction process which will be used across all areas of the children’s workforce.
The work is framed by the Every Child Matters agenda and its five priorities:
- Staying safe
- Achieving economic well-being
- Enjoying and achieving
- Being healthy
- Making a positive contribution
Good quality induction into your individual role and to the service as a whole is an entitlement for all new colleagues and we aim to ensure that this supports you both practically and in terms of your professional needs.
Nationally there are now induction standards for children’s workforce colleagues. These are mandatory for our social care colleagues but in Walsall we offer and expect that all colleagues will explore and interact with these standards as appropriate to their role.
You will be supported in this by your manager, particularly through one to one meetings or supervision.
We recognise that new starters to the children's workforce bring with them a wealth of experience, skills, knowledge and qualifications. As such, it may not be necessary for all new starters to undertake all elements under the learning log.
It is suggested that the line manager works through the checklist below with the new starter and asks the questions to establish whether the employee can meet the criteria through previous training or experience and confirms if the criteria is met or not. If not we suggest the new starter commences the relevant module of the learning log.

Every new starter is required however to undertake the workplace induction.
We hope that you enjoy your working time with Walsall Council. We are glad to have you on board and look forward to helping you develop with us.
