Emotional impact of fostering

Temporary foster care is always intended as a provisional or interim arrangement for a child who should, ideally, return to their own family. When a child leaves foster care, they often leave the foster carers with a mixture of emotions.
The role of the foster carer is to prepare the child for the future whether that is with birth parents, permanent fostering or adoption. Some carers feel satisfaction in having helped play a part in bringing about a change for the better in the child’s and their family’s circumstance. Although, others may feel apprehensive about the child’s future welfare.
It is only natural that some foster carers will feel a sense of loss. To an extent, heartache goes with the territory in fostering. Carers should be able to discuss their feelings about a child leaving with their support worker and experienced foster carers.
