Brownhills Transport Package elements

The Brownhills Transport Package comprises three distinct elements that work together. These address the problems associated with the Brownhills area and support its long-term regeneration. This strategy will relieve Brownhills town centre from large amounts of through traffic, providing a unique opportunity to improve the economy and environment through pedestrianisation and the creation of a public transport interchange. The Clayhanger Link will provide much needed relief to local 'rat running' and provide greater accessibility to the main road network.

A lot of new housing has recently been built in the Clayhanger area. It has been a long-standing plan to reduce through traffic in Clayhanger village and also provide a direct link to Brownhills town centre. The Clayhanger link will add to highway infrastructure already constructed, and includes a new road and canal bridge on the north east side of Clayhanger.

This will link Bridge Street to Northfields Way and Watermead Grange. This new link will make it easier to travel between the Clayhanger area and Brownhills town centre. It will also reduce the danger to pedestrians, whilst reducing traffic noise and smell, as well as improving air quality.

Brownhills Eastern Bypass

This is the key to solving traffic problems in the Brownhills area. The original scheme involved a Bypass element to run from just north of the village of Stonnall and connect up to the Lichfield Road and lead the traffic onto the A5. This element has now been removed from the Brownhills Transport Package. Walsall Council, along with both Lichfield and Staffordshire Councils, is considering various options for a revised alignment for a single lane bypass, once a final option has been identified we plan to take the proposals out to public consultation.

The new bypass is intended to move through traffic away from Brownhills High Street and the Ogley Road/Chase Road area. In these areas, the scheme will greatly reduce the amount of traffic and congestion. It will also decrease the danger to pedestrians and cyclists, whilst reducing the noise and smell caused by vehicles. By reducing through traffic on High Street, this scheme will help other changes to be introduced in Brownhills town centre that will allow us to pedestrianise a section of High Street.

Brownhills Centre improvements

By reducing traffic using the High Street through the Eastern Bypass scheme there is an opportunity to remove the remaining traffic from High Street. This traffic will be diverted onto Silver Street, which will be improved to allow two-way traffic. It is proposed to pedestrianise High Street between Church Road and Brickiln Street. This section of High Street will be re-paved, yet still allow vehicle access and parking before 10am and after 4pm.

We will also take the opportunity to improve footways and parking in the sections of High Street to the north and south of the pedestrian area. This pedestrian area will attract companies to Brownhills, and improve the town centre economy. As buses will not be able to drive through High Street we will provide new bus stops next to the Pier Street/Kirkside Grove area.
