Black Country tourism
Role of Black Country tourism
Black County Tourism was established as an organisation to develop business and leisure tourism in the area in partnership with the public, private and voluntary sectors. It receives £120 000 core funding from the four local authorities of Walsall, Wolverhampton, Sandwell and Dudley, as well as the Black Country Consortium. Among its private sector members are hotels, attractions and transport operators as well as other public sector organisations including the University of Wolverhampton and British Waterways.
In 2003 the unit was awarded £1.5 European funding to continue its work.
Black Country visitor economy strategy
Last year the Black Country Consortium commissioned Locum Destination to write a Visitor Economy Strategy for the Black Country, with funding from Advantage West Midlands.
The visitor economy is defined as encompassing tourism, leisure, creative industries, culture, sport, the arts, heritage, food & drink and retail/shopping.
The strategy establishes a strategic framework for developing the Black Country's visitor economy up to 2008, and outlines priorites for action.
Consultation on the strategy took place during the latter half of 2003 and early 2004. It will be launched in early summer 2004 and will be accompanied a Black Country-wide action plan. Individual action plans for Walsall, Wolverhampton, Sandwell and Dudley will follow.
