Black Country Youth Games 2006
Walsall school children take part in the Black Country Youth Games 2006
Over one hundred children from schools across Walsall competed in nine different sports at the recent Black Country Youth Games 2006.
The Walsall team, who were specially selected through tournaments and trials held in the months building up to the games; competed against children from Wolverhampton, Sandwell and Dudley in a full day of exciting competition at the Walsall Campus of Wolverhampton University.
Although the games were on a smaller scale than in previous years, it proved to be a successful event with Walsall claiming the “Fair Play Award” and achieving the runners up spot overall behind deserved winners Dudley.
However, Walsall claimed the Tag Rugby title as children in year five/six from Delves Junior School proved too good for their opponents, as well as and coming second in both the Hi 5 Netball and the mixed Basketball.
Other sports in the competition were tennis, girls football, boys football and mixed cricket for special schools, as well as judo, badminton, and aquathon as new sports introduced for this years’ competition.
The competitors aged ten to fifteen, also took part in the Sport Relief charity event by completing a combined mile in an Olympic style procession at the opening ceremony.
The event was organised jointly by each of the four Black Country councils and Black Country Sports.
