School admissions

Finding a school place for your children, either at primary or secondary school is one of the most important milestones for parents. Walsall Children's Services has a vision of excellence for all of its schools. They are all places where young people can develop, learn, experience and question the world around them.

If you are applying for a place at the start of the academic year, you can express a preference for two primary schools, and for up to five secondary schools. In addition to schools in Walsall, you can also express preferences for schools in other council areas.  Walsall Children's Services runs a coordinated admissions scheme with neighbouring councils and with schools where the Governors are the admissions authority, so you only have to fill in one form.

Walsall Children's Services

Walsall Children's Services acts as the admissions authority for a community and voluntary controlled schools. The governing body of foundation schools and voluntary aided school (normally Roman Catholic or Church of England schools) control admissions to those schools. Likewise, governors of The Walsall Academy act as the admissions authority for that school.

We always try to meet a parent's first preference, but sometimes more applications for places are received than the school has places available. When this happens we will try to offer your next highest preference. We are under a duty to offer your child a place in a school, and if we cannot meet any of your preferences, we will offer you a place in the nearest school to your home address where spaces are available.

You have a statutory right of appeal against a decision not to offer you a place in a school of your preference to an Independent Appeal Panel.
