Primley Avenue parking improvements

Walsall Council is introducing parking improvements outside three schools as part of its ongoing Red Routes programme.
The scheme will address road safety and traffic congestion concerns raised at the Red Route public consultation for the A454 Wolverhampton Road in June 2008.
Buses travelling along Primley Avenue, off Wolverhampton Road, Alumwell, are often delayed, passengers say, because of obstructions caused by cars.
As a result Walsall Council is proposing to introduce a single yellow line along Primley Avenue which will prohibit parking between 8am and 9.30am and 2.30pm and 4pm. It will also remove the grass verges along the left hand side of Primley Avenue from Reservoir Street. This removal will be partly subsidised by Red Route funding.
Councillor Anthony Harris, Walsall Council Cabinet member for transport said: “We are taking on board the congestion concerns raised by people as part of the Red Route consultation and it is essential that we take action.
“The 529 Bus service which travels along the Wolverhampton Road is to become a Bus Showcase route.
“The council has identified that the Route 331 bus service which travels along Wolverhampton Road via Primley Avenue regularly encounters congestion.
“This congestion occurs around the three school sites at peak am and pm times. Parents collecting and dropping off children are causing an obstruction to the road by parking around the mouths of junctions, parking on both sides of the road and obstructing residents’ driveways.
“This is severely delaying the Route 331 bus journey times as well as creating a dangerous environment for pedestrians walking along Primley Avenue.
“The new parking restrictions along Primley Avenue will be implemented to tackle the problem of illegal parking and relieving the congestion outside the school entrances.”
Councillor Harris added that it was important to avoid the parking problem being moved into other streets coming off Primley Avenue.
He said: “The removal of the grass verges along Primley Avenue will create legal and safer parking for parents collecting and dropping off their children.
“Parking in dedicated bays will also keep the carriageway clear and increase traffic flow. These proposals will also benefit the journey times of the 335 and 336 bus services that also serve Primley Avenue.”
