Ringroad update November 2007

Work has been progressing with an emphasis on completing the diversion of underground services. Wherever possible work has progressed in areas not affected by those services; such as the redecking of the canal bridge on Wolverhampton Road, and the construction of the abutment walls at the new rail bridge on Littleton Street West.

The diversion of underground services has taken longer than originally anticipated due in part to heavy congestion in the existing footways a legacy of the industrial nature of the town.

The redecking of the canal bridge is well advanced, and once completed the bridge the bridge will be able to carry heavy traffic for decades to come.

Some other work will not be so obvious such as work on the east abutment of the rail bridge.  The abutment is now cast, and it is expected that the new bridge beams will be placed before Christmas. Work is also on going to clear out an old land drainage culvert that runs underneath Littleton Street West in the vicintiy of the rail bridge. Whist Walsall escaped the worst of the summer floods the clearing of this watercourse will give added insurance against floods in the future.

The alterations to the arboretum junction are also well advanced, and the new signal junction can clearly be seen forming. The next stage of the junction is likely to mean changes to the way the junction operates. The contractor and the counicl have worked closely together to produce a traffic management scheme that will minimise the impact on road users, although some disruption will be unavoidable. More Information on these proposals will be issued through the media in due course.
