Getting a job
Links to Work (LTW) is the area of Walsall's Integrated Learning Disability Service which is focused on work preparation, work experience and support into full-time, part-time or voluntary employment.
By working together we aim to support people with a disability in taking up employment opportunities that enable them to make choices about their lives and take part in their local communities.
Work related training is offered in light engineering, assembly, packing, recycling, office and administration, gardening and catering.
At Links to Work people not only learn the required skills to eventually gain employment within their chosen field, but they also get the chance to make new friends and to build their self-confidence.
LTW has a partnership deal with 'Walsall Community College'. This enables us to give people accreditation for the skills that they have learned. For all who achieve accreditation, there will be a presentation evening held each year to acknowledge their achievements and present them with their certificate.
It is our aim at Links to Work to offer people work experience placements of their choice as part of our overall training package.
When a work placement is agreed with a company we job match, using the job descriptions and the skills matrix of the individuals. When the relevant trainee is identified, arrangements are made to interview before placement. Before the trainee commences the placement, a risk assessment and health and safety check is undertaken. If approved the trainee starts the work placement where a general induction takes place covering health and safety aspects including fire exits, first aid room, safety wear, lunch times and other details.
When a work placement is complete and the company is happy with the work and the attitude that the service user has displayed, an exit strategy is assessed which can include more training, continuance in the placement, a supported employment post or unsupported employment (whichever is appropriate).
The team at Links to Work are committed to offering ongoing support to enable both the employee and the employer to continue their service with the least amount of disruption.
