Visiting us by car

We are situated a quarter of a mile north of Walsall town centre, off the main road to Bloxwich. If you are driving from the south you should take the B4210 from Walsall town centre (Stafford Street/ Bloxwich Road) towards Bloxwich. Essex Street is the first turning on your right after the Horse and Jockey public house.

If you are driving from the north take the A34 along Bloxwich High Street. Stay in the left hand lane as the road widens by All Saints Church until you meet a fork in the road with traffic lights situated by a block of flats. Take the left fork where the road becomes the B4210 bearing right through Leamore to Walsall. You will eventually pass the Travel West Midlands Bus Depot on your right, then almost immediately cross a canal bridge (Pratt’s Bridge). Essex Street is the second turning on the left after the canal bridge.

We have on-site car parking facilities.

Public transport

If you are travelling to the West Midlands by air, after landing at Birmingham International Airport, catch a train from Birmingham International Railway Station to Birmingham New Street Railway Station.

Trains run frequently from Birmingham New Street, Stafford and Wolverhampton to Walsall Station. From here you must walk to St. Paul’s Street Bus Station if you wish to travel by bus, or Leicester Street Taxi Rank if you wish to travel by taxi.

When travelling by bus from St. Paul’s Street Bus Station, take buses numbered 171, 301 or 302, and alight at the stop before Essex Street.

The Local History Centre is in an old Edwardian school building so you cannot miss us!
