Outreach work

The outreach programme

Walsall Local History Centre's work also includes the promotion of interest in local history across the borough, and as such the centre operates a number of outreach programmes and events.

Volunteers

We have a group of volunteers, mostly local historians or society members, who work enthusiastically on specific tasks where we need help, such as cleaning and listing documents, indexing rate books and newspapers, transcribing non-conformist registers etc. All tasks which would otherwise take much longer to complete due to constraints on staff time. We are very grateful for their help and their enthusiastic and friendly company on Mondays when we are closed to the public!

Education service

An important part of Walsall Local History Centre's outreach is of course its Education Service, operated by Local Studies Librarian Cath Yates and Archivist Paul Ford. Much work is done to make our resources available to schools at many levels and age groups, primarily by making facilities available at the centre but also by visiting schools when time permits. Students of all ages researching local history topics are very welcome to study resources held at the centre, and we are happy to advise prospective visitors.

Publicity and local heritage features

The centre has an excellent relationship with our local news media, and items on our events, news and new publications regularly appear. We also work with local newspaper the Walsall Chronicle who publish our regular monthly local history and news feature Local Heritage in the last week of every month.

Publications

Walsall Local History Centre publishes at least one book or booklet each year on a local history subject, researched and written by centre staff or outside authors who have been commissioned by the centre. The centre's publications and others about the area are on sale, together with many other items, in our Reception Shop.
