Grounds maintenance services
Grounds maintenance services include the care of public grassed areas, trees owned by the authority, play areas, shrub beds and horticultural features.
Grassed areas
There are several different standards and frequencies of grass cutting through out the Borough ranging from wild flower areas that are cut twice a year to ornamental areas in parks and cemeteries that are mown weekly during the growing season.
Most verges are cut regularly between April and October. This is generally carried out on a fortnightly basis, although periods of inclement weather may delay operations. Extra cuts may be added before or after these dates as necessary. All clippings are meant to be left on the verge either by sweeping or by the use of blower machines. Growth around obstacles in the grass, such as road signs or fence lines, is controlled by strimming and spraying.

Shrub beds and flower beds
Shrub areas will be cleared of litter on a regular basis and pruned annually, usually during the winter months, to keep growth under control. They will be treated up to three times per year to restrict the growth of weeds. In town centre areas, parks and cemeteries seasonal bedding displays are provided.
Herbicides and pesticides
The use of herbicides and pesticides is kept to a minimum where ever possible, however in some situations chemical control is necessary.
Children's play areas
Play areas are inspected and cleansed on a daily basis to ensure a safe and clean environment for play. Vigilance is still required at all times when using these facilities as we cannot guarantee that we can prevent someone with malicious intent from vandalising the equipment or leaving syringes, broken glass etc. around the area. If you do find a problem with a play area you should keep children away from the problem, warn other users and report it to us as soon as possible by contacting the Customer Contact Centre. Do not attempt to pick up syringes or other sharp objects.
Trees
The grounds maintenance service care for trees along the side of the highway, in cemeteries, in parks and on other council owned land. Any problems with council owned trees can be reported via the Customer Contact Centre.
