Conservation area appraisals and management plans

Conservation area appraisals are used to help local authorities in their duty to preserve or enhance those aspects of character or appearance which give an area its special interest. They also act as a framework for the control of development by providing a greater understanding of the character of the conservation area which is an integral consideration in the preparation of any proposals.

The appraisals offer an overview of the whole conservation area and are not intended to be comprehensive. Omission of any particular building, feature or space should not be taken to imply that it is of no interest.

Conservation area management plans are the next step after character statements. They provide guidance through policy statements to assist in the preservation and enhancement of the conservation area. This is a direct response to the 1990 Planning (listed buildings and conservation areas) Act which places a duty on local planning authorities to formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of its conservation areas.

Forthcoming appraisals

The council is currently preparing five further conservation area appraisals and management plans as part of its rolling programme to produce an up-to-date appraisal and management plan for each conservation area.
