Street trading explanatory notes

1. All streets within the borough of Walsall have been designated as one of three types:

  1. Prohibited streets - where 'no' trading is allowed;
  2. Licensed streets - in these streets, all traders must obtain a licence from the council. All trading in licence streets will take place from a fixed site in the street;
  3. Consent streets - in these streets, all traders must obtain the consent of the council. In these streets, trading which is of a mobile nature is envisaged.

2. All applicants are asked to decide in which street or streets they wish to trade and then consult the enclosed list of streets to ascertain in which category it lies.

3. The applicant must then decide whether his or her trade is a suitable one, bearing in mind the designation of the street (i.e. fixed site for licence street; mobile trade for consent streets).

4. The correct fee must be enclosed with the application. Payment can be made either:

  • by post with cheque made payable to Walsall Council;
  • or in person at the council office (Licensing Unit, Challenge Building, Hatherton Road, Walsall, WS1 1YG).

5. The fees are as follows:

(a) Walsall town centre (specific sites only - refer to list) £2,650

(b) Licence streets (excluding Walsall town centre)

·(ii) Area consent (based on electoral wards) period current fee.

·An area consent may cover one street or a group of streets in the same electoral ward.

6. Applicants may not commence trading until their application has been processed and a licence has been issued.

7. Applicants are asked to note that all permits will require renewal with effect from 31 March in each year irrespective of the type and/or duration of permit issued.
