A4148 Red Route – Broadway Phase Two

Introduction

Walsall Council is proposing to implement Red Routes within the Borough as part of the West Midlands Local Transport Plan.

The proposals for the Red Routes network in Walsall are being developed and discussions with local people will form the basis of the consultation process.

What is a Red Route?

A Red Routes is a way of making our most important roads work better for everyone – the people that travel on them, the businesses along the route and the residents who live near by.

What is the aim of the scheme?

The A4148 Broadway is an important section of the strategic road network in Walsall which is heavily used by a variety of road users.

The aim of the scheme is to control the movement along the route using Red Route enforcement which will enable the traffic to move more freely and decrease journey times.

What are the proposals?

Review vehicle journey times along the route and look at ways of reducing them
Review the current parking restrictions and replace the existing ‘yellow line’ restrictions with new Red Route lines, signs and enforcement
Provide better enforcement to eliminate illegal stopping and parking
Review the type, frequency and severity of traffic accidents along this route and identify improvements where required
Review all current pedestrian facilities
Review the current cycling provisions

Which junctions will be improved?

The following junctions have been identified as not performing as well as they could:

Magdalene Road
Bescot Crescent

We are currently exploring alternative options at these locations and looking to reconfigure these junctions to increase capacity and reduce vehicle journey times.

Why are they needed?

Congestion costs the West Midlands’ economy £2.2 billion per year. Red Routes are a method of ensuring that the most effective use is made of the road space allowing for improved travel for both people and goods.

Inconsiderate and illegal parking stops traffic flowing smoothly and prevents us from going about our daily lives. Junctions have also become congested and are not working efficiently. Doing nothing is not an option – we need to tackle it now.

Which roads will be affected?

The Red Route scheme will follow the whole of the Broadway that encompasses Walsall town centre. Phase two will commence at the A34 Birmingham Road and continue to the junction at Wallows Lane.and Bescot Crescent.
